Background

Context of Balance Innovation's Needs

Since the inception of Balance Innovation's software, users have been required to contact support to register and deregister systems and manage the cash tracking devices within them.
 
By allowing the customer to manage these devices, we hope to dually reduce the need for human resources while reducing the barriers to busy users for completing this process.

-    Enable customers to manage registration of payment processing devices independently
-    Share relevant device details
-    Structure a user-friendly process across multiple pages

Research

Developing with a Persona in Mind

We started out with defining our user as an IT professional, responsible for managing the registration process as well as systems and devices.

As we established the type of user in this scenario, it allowed us to outline a user flow where we could indicate the pathways that address our core needs.

Design

Rapid Prototyping

We need a headquarters for these systems, which required me to create a visual display focused on sharing each system and their devices quickly.                                                       
As you can tell by concepts, there were a lot of options available for us to try. The question rather became what design would fit the needs of the software most effectively?

Structure of Systems

The problem I ran into was not only the structure, but how to structure the small quantity of information without creating barriers from over-organizing. With two system types, one having three devices and the other none, I had to design for each kind intentionally.

Essential details like last modified and date of change are included for clear device descriptions

As time went on, we were able to develop designs that suited the user flow as well as fit within the parameters of our design system.

Lessons Learned

Work Collaboratively

The structure of systems and devices became difficult to design due to such high variability in features.

Through our team meetings, I was able to find a voice for these issues, allowing me to develop a deeper understanding of the systems we had. My team's questions exposed information I had glazed over after focusing on other parts.

Outside perspective broke my thought patterns for better design.

Try Different Tools

As someone who likes to use Figma, I did the opposite of what many designers do and reverted to Sketch. The company is still in the process of converting to Figma, meaning that I would have to try something I wasn't as familiar with. 

Sketch and Miro turned out to be a wonderful way for me to view differences of applications while also strengthening my skills. 

For a young designer, I haven't had to experience the shifting of software as people who are senior in the field do. This allowed me to build confidence that it's not the applications that matter, its the design principles.

Be a Resource

This became my second internship to date, so walking into this role, we had interns who had never worked to someone who had five internships.

I struggled in my last internship to facilitate conversation with others due to being the only one in the department. This time, I decided to lead a standup on Fridays to learn more about each person as well as what their role provides. 

We were able to build deeper camaraderie and a greater understanding of the company as a whole.
